Speak blessings over our lives

Do you know the words that you speak is really powerful?

Often when we hear remarks from people, the remarks can easily affect our mood depending on what kind of remarks are said. Even as simple as saying “Good boy” or “You are a naughty boy” to the innocent child, can really affect how they react or feel. Let alone, us adults who tend to think a lot over words being said about us. In the bible I am taught that, the power of words do not only affect our emotions, it can also greatly affect our life.

Proverbs 12:18 “There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health.”

Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

James 1:26 “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.”

James 3:5-6 “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

I took verses from the old testament (Proverbs) and from the new testament (James), to show that our tongue is a very powerful tool in affecting our lives that is reminded yet again in the new testament: What you speak makes a difference.

James 3:8-10 “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”

We cannot control what others say about us, but we can choose to speak goodness over our lives and to the people around us. Even after hearing bad comments said to you, you can choose to ignore those comments and speak blessings over those negativity. For I assure you, it is not their comments that will make a difference in your life. It is what you choose to do. To take heart those negativity and let it be our root in our heart or to ignore the negative comments and speak goodness into your life. However, beloved, as a follower of Christ, even if evil is being spoken to you, bless them also. For the bible taught us this.

James 4:11-12 “Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?”

Matthew 5:44-45 “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

We have been given great mercy from our Lord and in fact God has shown us more than mercy. His loving grace and kindness are what led us to have these blessings in our lives. We can have more of God’s blessings when we speak more of the blessings of God into our lives every single day. By speaking we are actually planting a seed in our hearts also. Interestingly, I realise when you learn to speak blessings over your life, it will affect greatly on how you speak to others as well. Not only will you bless yourself, you will also bless others with the words you speak. Even the bible confirms it.

2 Corinthians 9:8-11 “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work, As it is written: ‘He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever’. Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.”

The above verse is actually speaking of sowing. However, when I read it again and again, sowing can mean more than just sowing your “financial seed” to the Lord. By speaking blessings over and over repeatedly in our lives and to other people, we are also sowing to the Lord by planting “words of blessings seed” into our hearts and the people. I like the last sentence when it says “while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God”. It is such an honor to be a blessing to others just by speaking goodness over their life.

As for our enemies who only want to speak evil, do not be afraid of what those words can do to us. Let God handle our enemies for us.

Matthew 5:39 “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.”

Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

I love the verse on Genesis 12:3. God’s promise towards Abraham has already guaranteed us a place full of blessings. This promise was made even before we are born and all we need to do is to only speak the blessings every single day that has already been given to us into our lives.

I want to declare the verse from 1 Peter 3:10-12 into you and myself as a prayer. Let’s pray.

“Heavenly Father, he who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good. Let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. Thank you, Father, for this great teaching You have taught us. In Jesus name, I declare only goodness will come out of our mouth and that You will guide us through the Holy Spirit in us of what to say to ourselves and to the people around us. Amen.”

Beloved, you can refer to Pastor Joel Osteen book of declarations if you wish to speak blessings into your life but do not know how to start. (I am not in any way affiliated to Pastor Joel Osteen. I just love His words of declarations of blessings and I do incorporate these into my daily declarations of blessings)
