Happy birthday, Jesus (: and Merry Christmas, everyone! Today is the mark of the day when Jesus is born as fully man on earth. He, the Son of God, is sent by our Daddy God to come down to earth as the “Son of Man” because God wants us to be saved and be redeemed from this fallen world. Yesterday, I was just meditating on this verse and it was brought up at my church service on christmas eve:
Matthew 1:21-23 “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us.'”
Our Daddy God already planned to redeem us from this fallen world way before Christ is born. Through prophet Isaiah, He wants us to know that a child will be born out of a virgin and this is only possible if it is from God. And only through this child’s sacrifice for us that is possible for God to be with us. This child is none other than our Savior, Jesus Christ, God’s beloved one and only Son.
Matthew 3:16-17 “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'”
Let me share a story shared by my pastor:
A parent have twins as their children. One day, one of the twin fell seriously ill and his blood type is really special and only his twin brother was able to save him. The healthy twin was asked by his parents to give his blood to save his ill twin brother. However, he took really long to decide before finally giving his blood to his ill twin brother. When his ill twin brother got well, he asked his healthy twin why did he took so long to decide to give his blood to him when he is almost dying. And his healthy twin brother replied, “I thought that I had to give my life away to save you, that is why I took so long to decide if I am ready to give my life just to save you”.
This beautiful story reminds me that it is really very natural for us human beings to feel afraid to die for someone else. Just imagine, Jesus, in his “human flesh” like us to even had the opportunity to feel afraid but despite that, He just immediately knew His purpose on earth is to be our sacrificial lamb for us to be saved from this fallen world.
Matthew 20:28 “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Just imagine, knowing that you are only to be born to serve others. Humans include myself is a selfish being. I always want what is best for me. But Jesus, being born in this world has only one purpose and that is to fulfill His destiny for us sinners.
Matthew 5:17-18 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one title will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.”
Jesus wants us to know that God is Holy, hence the Law is there. But He is not born to destroy it, but to be our sacrificial lamb so we no longer need to constantly sacrifice “something” to God to cleanse us when we sin, for Jesus is the perfect sacrifice since He is the Son of God Himself. This clearly shows how much grace and mercy God has shown us. It shows how low God bent down to save us by sending His only beloved Son to be like one of us, feel like us, but only to end His life by suffering, just for us to have a place in Heaven, to have eternal life and even a blessed life when our flesh are still on earth.
John 17 “Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent me.
I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.
And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”
John 17 is a prayer of Jesus for me that I really keep close to my heart. Jesus kept repeating on and on how we, sinners deserve only the best. To me, the best part is how Jesus kept emphasizing “I in them, and You in Me, that they may be made perfect in one” This is only possible with God’s unlimited grace and mercy for us. And He sure has given us His limitless grace and unconditional love that He, our merciful God forgave all our past, present and future sins, that we may sin no more when Jesus fulfilled His destiny for us. Thank you, Jesus, for this day 25th December, that You are born in this world is really precious to me. Before I end this post, I want dedicate simple yet beautiful song on Jesus precious birth day:
